16th Century "Western" Music and the New World

"This class explores and investigates the interplay between European and native populations during late-period Colonial Mexico and the surrounding areas in regards to musical traditions and emerging compositions. Included in our discussion will be firsthand sources such as codices and manuscripts as well as mundane notation of select works by prominent composers (European and American) in the scene. A pronunciation and performance guide for Classical Nahuatl will also be provided.
