OPDB: Intro to Pipe and Tabor
- Robyyan Torr d'Elandris ( D S)
- State Room East on Thursday at 12:00PM
The One Person Dance Band series will educate the participant in historically informed instrumental choice and practice, enabling a solo performer to successfully provide music and rhythm for Renaissance dance. The pipe and tabor is an instrumental combination that lets the musician play melody with one hand and percussion with the other. The three hole tabor pipe has a range of an octave and a fifth, percussion is traditionally a drum of a particular shape known as a tabor, but could be bells, triangle, bones, or other percussion instrument. This class will introduce the English tabor pipe, although other three hole pipes will be mentioned. Students will get a grounding in how the tabor pipe works, coaching in getting controlled pitches from the instrument, and an introduction to single stick drum technique. We may get as far as playing a tune. Bring a tabor pipe (in any key) and drumstick if you have them. A few instruments will be available for purchase from the instructor. An ability to read music is not required, but may be helpful.
